The demand from the buy side for brokers to support allocations is increasing in Europe. There are a few reasons behind this. Firstly vendor Order Management Systems are now implementing allocations via FIX - there are at least 4 OMS that I know of. This means that when buy side firms have got their infrastructure up and running for IOIs, orders, and executions, Allocations come for free (almost). Secondly, a number of buy side firms only use Gloabl Oasys as a means for brokers to send the splits back to the buy-side firm for confirmation. The splits themselves have to be communicated to the broker manually (phone or FAX) by the dealers. If the buy-side firm has an allocations-enabled OMS, there is a big attraction from their perspective to get away from the dealers printing off the splits and FAXing them - they just press a button!

I do not think it is "a matter of course" that orgainisations will implement FIX allocations as established ETC procedures existed long before FIX had any significant usage. Given that there is little competition to FIX in the IOI, Order, Execution area, it does seem to make a huge amount of sense to carry the structure through the entire ETC process.
