Newbie help: New Order Single.

Hi, I am just getting started with FIX and am writing a MFC app (FIX 4.2) to test the basics with our 3rd party FIX engine, like logon, logoff, New, Modify and Cancel Orders for Futures products.

I am able to do the Logon and Logoff successfully. However, the message for New Order is being sent and not getting recognized by the engine.

Are there any reference books/utils for using the FIX (4.2) other than the specifications, which would help validate/debug these messages before it is sent to the FIX engine.

In addition, I would be much obliged, if you can point in the right direction for extra materials (other than the specifications.
