because the FAST protocol is a binary coded protocol, where you have to know all the message structures, I mean without FAST coding/decoding you cannot mix FAST and your own binary messages, BUT you could define a simple template for your internal binary message which contains only one byte vector field. The decoding of such a message does not consume many CPU time.
