I agree with Scott about the fact that there should not be no a one to one relationship between the Logout message and resetting the sequence number. Many Logout messages may be exchanged during a single session. I also think, though, that the two parties should exchange one of these Logout messages when the agreed upon stop time for the session is reached. This does require some level of synchronization between the two systems' clocks but one can always add or subtract a reasonable (10 minutes?) amount of time to the clock to compensate the possible lack of synchronization. Or, perhaps, we can add an optional field to the Logout message layout to distinguish a Logout that is meant to be followed by a Logon with sequence number 1 from the other Logouts.
