Understanding FIX for a Newbie

Would anyone be able to advise on how I could gain a foothold in the City of London, with FIX understanding and experience under my belt.

My current background is in the IT support arena for the last 10 years, although none of this has been in the financial arena etc....a major issue in gaining a foothold for a reputable company in the City.

As I understand, FIX is one of the areas that I need to understand in order to progress to what most certainly is a completely different playing field.

I am more than certain that I have what it takes to handle the pressures of city life, but in order to do so; I must make sure I am at least prepared to a certain extent with technologies such as FIX.

All advice is more than welcome and gratefully received.

Regards,

Mark Murray.
