29 Aug 2010 5:08AM ET Yes. I've seen this with some custom implementations of FIX links between an equity based OMS and a fixed income trading platform. Since the version of FIX used was neither 4.2 nor 4.4 the OMS vendor used the name of the fixed income platform as BeginString.

If I remember correctly I once came across a FIX log of communication between a FIX engine and its Trading application (I would prefer not to name the FIX Engine / trading application both of which are from the same vendor) the messages of this log started like 8=FIX.IPC^ and had crazy tag numbers which matched none from the FPL's FIX specs.
