FIX Communication Channels

Suppose there are two parties involved in a conversation using the FIX protocol. How many channels do they need to use to send messages? Do all the messages go in the same channel (as in HTTP)? Or do they have to use multiple channels for requests and responses? Or does FIX protocol leave this to be handled by the FIX implementation?
