Is this the account number maintained by your firm (i.e., Institution Internal Account Number) used to identify the client, or is it the account number maintained by the agent (i.e.,Agent Internal Account Number) used to identify the client?
This is just an opinion - I have no evidence to support this or any other view:
I would expect that the allocation account ids will generally be sourced by the buy side and will need to be held against the sub account static data records held by sell side organisations wishing to receive and process allocations using FIX. This is not dissimilar to the Thomson ETC model, in fact I wouldn't be too surprised if buy side firms who choose to use FIX allocations having traditionally used Thomson OASYS use their OASYS access codes as allocation account ids.
