Oh I thought you were reading the 4.1J extension document. I do have a copy of the 4.1J extension document but it is in Japanese and I believe unfortunately there is no English version. In any case, I will send you the Japanese version of the document to your e-mail directly.
4.1J is based on FIX4.1, and for example, tag 8(BeginString) = FIX.4.1
Therefore, I do not think you can talk to counterparty talking FIX4.2 with FIX4.1J protocol.
