The Evolving Exchange Environment in Africa 2010

This exchanges focused session will explore the new and emerging trends impacting the African markets including:

  • International crossing networks – ECNs, ATSs & Dark Pools –  the issues, challenges and opportunities they present and if there a need for these platforms in the African market?
  • Regulatory developments and the progress of the JSE African Board

The JSE will be asked to speak about how they are leveraging the LSE technology – what future developments they have in plan and the rest of the panel should discuss whether these developments will impact their business models and the perceived benefits they will deliver to the community

This session will explore the growth in algorithmic trading that has taken place internationally and the scope for trading algorithmically in Africa.  Attendees will benefit from a detailed discussion focused on the different types of algorithmic trading strategies available, the circumstances within which they should be used and the benefits they deliver. 

Additionally this session will also explore high frequency trading and the risks and benefits it presents to the market, and the applicability of post-trade analysis in the African markets.

FIXatdl: Generating Efficiency Gains and Cost Savings for the Algorithmic Trading Community

In March 2010, FPL released a new industry standards-based messaging language for algorithmic trading strategies, the FIX algorithmic trading definition language (FIXatdlSM).  This interactive session will introduce the real opportunities that FIXatdl will offer to the trading community. It will explore the support it offers, the benefits it seeks to achieve and how firms are now actively using FIXatdl to effectively meet business requirements.

Using FIX to Address the Real Business Issues Impacting the African Markets

Developed to meet evolving business requirements, the FIX Protocol offers significant functionality for the trading community.  However, to what degree does it support the trading needs of the African markets?  Using the example of a firm active in the local market, that is using FIX to solve a range of existing business issues, this session will explore the existing functionality offered by the protocol, will look at the future needs emerging in Africa and how technical developments already in scope by FPL will help your firm to address these.

This session will also explain how local firms can influence the future development of the protocol to ensure that FIX continues to support the African markets.

T+3 Securities Settlement

In today’s global Securities market, the `T+3’ three-day settlement date applies to most security transactions, including stocks, bonds, municipal securities, mutual funds traded through a brokerage firm, and limited partnerships that trade on an exchange.  With the JSE moving to the T+3 settlement cycle timeframe, this session will look at the impact of this on the South African market and the overseas parties that trade on the South African markets.

The Opportunities & Challenges of Trading in Africa

This session will explore the issues and challenges that firms face as they seek to trade in Africa and the beneficial impact that increased use of the electronic trading practices and the FIX Protocol could present to help firms overcome these difficulties. 

The topics that will be discussed include the costs of trading and how increased use of FIX has the potential to generate greater market efficiencies and significant cost savings for the user community.  It will also explore electronic order routing options available locally and the steps that Africa could take to increase inbound electronic order flow. Furthermore, the session will discuss new instruments for trading and reporting available over FIX within the Fixed Income and Derivative markets and if there is the potential to create an African exchanges network plus much, much more!
