Phupinder Gill
President and Chief Operating Officer
Chicago Mercantile Exchange
Phupinder Gill is President and Chief Operating Officer of Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. (CME Holdings) in the Office of the CEO. He works closely with CEO Craig S. Donohue on implementing strategic initiatives and oversees the Technology, Operations, and Clearing House Division of the Exchange. Additionally, Mr. Gill is President of GFX Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of CME that provides liquidity in foreign exchange futures.
From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Gill was Managing Director and President of the Exchange's Clearing House Division, which includes the Clearing, Risk Management and Audit Departments of CME. In this role, he worked closely with most of the world's major financial institutions — who are among CME's largest customers — to ensure that CME provides the most efficient and cost-effective services and technologies for their client and proprietary trading activities. In 2003, he led the implementation of the company's historic clearing agreement with the Chicago Board of Trade ® (CBOT ® ) , under which CME provides clearing (back-office processing) for all CBOT products. As a result of this agreement, CME now clears 89% of all futures and futures options in the U.S. Previously, Mr. Gill was responsible for implementing the CLEARING 21 ® system and CME's cross-margining arrangement with the Options Clearing Corporation, which significantly reduces performance bond requirements for firms.
Mr. Gill joined CME in February 1988 and has held numerous positions within the Clearing House Division, including Senior Director of Risk Management, Vice President, and Senior Vice President, before his promotion to President, Clearing House in 1998. During his tenure, he has overseen virtually every function performed by the Clearing House, including operations, risk management, collateral management, audits, settlements, trade processing, systems development and deliveries.
He earned a bachelor's degree in finance in 1985 and an MBA degree in 1987, both from Washington State University .
